Telstra today promised customers the long-awaited Android 2.2 update (Froyo) would be introduced to its flagship HTC Desire handsets within the next four weeks.
“A few of you have asked how the update to HTC Desire’s operating system is tracking,” a mobile handsets specialist for the company, Andrew Volard, wrote on its Exchange blog this afternoon. “I can confirm that we’re set to introduce Android 2.2 (aka FroYo) within the next four weeks.”
The handset’s manufacturer HTC had not previously confirmed the exact date when the update for the high-end Android device would hit Australia, saying only in July that it would land in “the next quarter”. The Desire is one of the best-selling Android handsets in Australia and has been heavily publicised by Telstra since its introduction in April.
The news comes as the exact date when owners of other handsets from manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG would be able to upgrade their devices to Froyo remains unclear, with the timing depending on each handset maker and telco.
“As a background, Telstra always puts its firmware deployments through rigorous network and performance testing — and this takes a little bit of time,” wrote Volard today.
“It’s also important to note that HTC works with hundreds of operators around the world and Telstra, like those operators, has had to secure a place in HTC’s software deployment schedule. Again this takes time. Many of us at Telstra are HTC Desire fans, so we’re as keen as you to make FroYo available. Thanks for your patience while we finalise testing.”
Volard also made a couple of other minor announcements with respect to Android. Telstra, he said, was currently working in future user interface designs for Android phones on its Next G network that would reduce the number of shortcuts users were saving to the menu system.
In addition, Telstra will launch Samsung’s Galaxy S handset next week on 21 September. The device was previously exclusive to Optus.
