Optus offers early phone upgrade option, new data deals

news Optus has introduced a new offer that will give new customers the option to receive an early phone upgrade on its My Plan Plus deal.

From 11 March, customers signing up for the postpaid plan will be able to opt for a new phone just 12 months into the contract.

Customers wishing to upgrade to a new smartphone can return their current phone to an Optus store in good working order, pay a one-off fee of $99, and receive the upgrade on a new 24 month plan.

Alternately, customers can keep their existing phone and opt for a new phone by paying the remaining full cost of the current phone, including any amount that Optus would otherwise have covered, and get the additional device on a new 24 month plan.

Customers who sign up to a $30-plus 24-month My Mobile Broadband Plus plan, will also be eligible to upgrade to a new tablet after 12 months, with conditions being identical to the phone upgrade deal.

Additionally, the firm said, customers can choose to leave the My Plan Plus contract before it expires with no penalty fees. Again they will have to pay the remaining cost of their phone or tablet, including any monthly handset credit that the firm would otherwise have covered.

“We know a reliable network, generous data inclusions and cancellation fees have always been top of mind when customers are looking for a new plan.” said Ben White, Managing Director of Marketing and Product at Optus. “That’s why with My Plan Plus we’re giving customers the freedom to trade up their handset, as well as the flexibility to leave their plan if their circumstances change.”

“With so many great new phones hitting the market every year, two years can seem like a lifetime to wait for a new phone. That’s why Optus has introduced the New Phone Trade Up offer,” he said.

Optus’ postpaid My Plan range gives customers greater certainty over the cost of their data by automatically giving them an extra 1GB of data for only $10 if they used more than their monthly allowance.

In addition to the new phone upgrade offer, Optus has also announced two new data packed plan options with My Plan Plus:

  • The $100 My Plan Plus plan (minimum total cost $2,400 over 24 months) providing 15GB of data per month within Australia.
  • The $120 My Plan Plus plan (minimum total cost $2,880 over 24 months) providing 20GB of data per month within Australia.

My Plan Plus includes unlimited standard national calls to landlines and mobiles, and unlimited standard national SMS and data inclusions.

Why not just offer 12 month contracts then? Oh, that’s right, that little something called “lock-in”.

Am I not understanding this properly? It seems like a pretty much standard pay-out-what-you-owe scenario except with the “added bonus” of an additional 24 month contract.

I’m sorry, Optus, this is very underwhelming.

Phone repayments are larger than most customers would want to stomach. They should probably offer it, but it would be the equivalent in price to just putting that cash in a jar and cancelling a 24mo contract at 12mo.
