Telstra has recently been quite involved in the One Laptop Per Child project in indigenous communities, as the telco’s chief executive David Thodey explains in a video posted on the company’s YouTube channel.
“Why is Telstra involved? Because we’ve got a really active reconciliation plan we’ve been working on for the past 12 months,” he says. “We’re a local company and we’ve been part of this community for years, and we want to give back.”
How much fibre is Telstra laying out to connect these remote community OLPC lappies to the internet? Is it subsidised or free? That would be impressive.
There is a fair bit of fibre being laid up there — for example:

I think the view that has been taken is that the mining centres need fibre — and they can easily extend it to the remote Aboriginal communities. But I wouldn’t say that those communities are the main reason they’re laying fibre up there ;)
