Merry Christmas from Malcolm Turnbull

40

blog Following on from yesterday’s Christmas card from the good Senator Stephen Conroy, we’ve now received a similar message of Yuletide cheer from his opposite, Shadow Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. We believe the festive picture is a view of Bondi Beach from the left-hand side — appropriate given Turnbull’s seat of Wentworth.

In return, we sent a message thanking Turnbull for raising the level of debate in the technology and media portfolios over the past year — given the Coalition’s relative quiesence in these areas in previous years. Whatever you think of Turnbull, after all, there is no doubt that the Liberal MP is genuinely interested in the technology sector and the issues which enflame it — and Turnbull has set a new benchmark for engagement with the community over the past year. Turnbull was easily the most discussed public figure on Delimiter in 2012, and his passion and intellectualism does him credit.

If party policies and allegiances were set aside, the Earl of Wentworth remains your writer’s personal choice for Prime Minister (or perhaps President, one day?). Here’s hoping he can knock Tony Abbott off his (increasingly shaky) perch in 2013.

  1. It’s a pitty that we won’t get our NBN if Coalition are elected to power.

As a xmas present in 2021.

  2. hey all, just a quick note — I appreciate that many of you do not have a fantastic opinion of Mr Turnbull at this point, owing to the Coalition’s rival NBN policy. However, I would point out that it’s Christmas — keep your comments polite or I will insta-delete them.

    • Renai LeMay – The Fist of Santa!

Thou Shalt Ho Ho Ho. Politely.

      (we’ll be good…)

      • You have all been very naughty! Very naughty indeed! Except you, Dr. Zoidberg. This is for you.

    • “However, I would point out that it’s Christmas — keep your comments polite or I will insta-delete them.”

Hehehe, let’s just say I hope the Grinch gets some Coal.

    • Ooooohh! Renai has a “SMITE” key on his computer!
Cheers Renai. Happy Silly Season to you and yours. Party your pants off, or whatever you wish. Have fun! Party hard! Stay safe. We want you around for next year.

  3. Thank you for raising the profile of the Atomic Banana and making it easier for us to question it’s vaguarity.

    Happy Christmas Mr Turnbull :)

  4. Merry Christmas Mr Turnbull! Thanks for having the common sense to back Australia becoming a republic, for publicly supporting gay marriage, and for your efforts in trying to tackle global warming. Here’s hoping you adopt some of that same progressive vibe, with your attitude towards broadband in 2013 :)

  5. “Here’s hoping he can knock Tony Abbott off his (increasingly shaky) perch in 2013.”

Still clinging to “the dream” Renai? If only he had the support to lead a coup.. or even just support for more than tin-cans and string. :)

      • FSttN — Festive String to the Node. :)

The Member for Wentworth, if nothing else has at least attempted to address the notion of a national broadband network; and actually expressed views that weren’t straight out of the Old Testament.

No idea why he’s a Liberal, though. A bit more progressive.

    • You might be forgetting that Mr. Rabbit defeated Mr. Turnbull in the election for leader by a wafer-thin margin of one vote. The Libs always eat their failed leaders; this time next year, the tables could be turned.

  6. Typical conservative, ignoring your Marital status that Labor is happy to give you ;-) (this joke has legs yet!)

  7. Wow, a Christmas card from Mr Turnbull. No Ms Renai this time I assume? So it shows some thought was put into posting them. I guess he can’t be that annoyed despite his singling you out in speeches on a number of occasions.

  8. “Here’s hoping he can knock Tony Abbott off his (increasingly shaky) perch in 2013.”

From the mouth of a rather influential Liberal Party person: “Malcolm maybe popular, but he’s too ‘left’ to be elected leader of The Party”

Which means he’s too supportive of gay rights, refugees and other top conservative headline grabbing topics.

    • You mean he’s too close to mainstream opinion on those matters, rather than far right religious dinosaur opinion?

Well, it did cost him his job as leader of the opposition… having the temerity to actually give some credence to this new-fangled ‘science’ stuff. Everyone knows The Truth comes verbatim out of a book that was written 1,700 years ago by a bunch of sheep herders in between being fed to lions and feeding others to lions… Naturally that’s the best place to find guidance on what to do about fibre-optic communications, or genetic engineering, or any of a number of other ‘modern’ dilemmas.
(Note: I’m not knocking people who are religious – just those who think their ‘holy scripture’ is an instruction manual, rather than a philosophical guidebook).

  9. The Razr M Review is more interesting

All this left wing/ right wing stuff isn’t that all dead these days. It really should be. Good politicians should be taking policies from all the spectrums of society

  10. Happy Chunakah Malcolm and Lucy! Have a fantastic Silly Season!

Well that is what I call it, as I believe Karl Marx was correct in at least that religion is the opium of the masses.
But if people find happiness in a God or a flying Spaghetti Monster, or even Money, go knock your socks of and enjoy yourself. Just don’t bother those who don’t care about it and are not wanting to deal with it the way you do.

HAPPY SILLY SEASON! Stay alive everyone, and safe, so we can all gleefully annoy the crap out of each other next year. :{D

    • I believe that’s spelt “Chanukah” (or Hanukkah) , but otherwise excellent post. I’ve always loved that Karl Marx quote (and you get extra points for mentioning the FSM :) ).

      • I think I need new glasses. Sorry for the misspell. Will I be crucified for it? :{P~~
I love the FSM! He’s just so much fun. More so than than a lot of the others.
Thank you for the extra points. What do they get me? :{D
Have a great Silly Season Simon!
Yeah! I’ll be nice and wish the same for Tel. :{Þ

        • “Will I be crucified for it?”

I’m pretty sure the mad monk has plans to reintroduce crucifixion as part of work choices, so only if the coalition are elected.

“I love the FSM. He’s just so much fun. More so than a lot of the others”

I’d argue he’s the only one that is any fun. And generally makes more sense than any of the others too. Remember, he boiled for our sins, so we can pretty much party it up and not give a shit. Hooray for pirates, pasta and his noodly appendage! :)

“Thank you for the extra points. What do they get me?”

Each point is redeemable for an extra megabit on the NBN. Once you’re hooked up just let Conroy know, and then Mike Quigley personally comes around and hammers on the extra megabits by hand to your router. All going well you should end up with 103mpbs in total.

“Have a great silly season Simon”

Likewise, fellow pastafarian! Stay safe and be good :)

  11. A very happy and relaxing Christmas and New Year break, Malcolm and Lucy.

And Malcolm, try and find some time to contemplate that many of us might actually be right when we point out to you that the NBN as planned is a valuable concept. The forceful vigor of your political opposition would be better employed in ensuring the current plan is delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  12. Been thinking about the two Christmas cards Renai has received from The Turnbull, and Senator Conroy, and I got to thinking that in a way they sum up both sides policies quite nicely.

Conroy’s card, while specificly designed with the recipient in mind, had a minor issue with detail – MS Renai LeMay. The Turnbulls, on the other hand, has no detail whatsoever.

    A little ironic.

    • Actually – I felt that it was the other way around in regards to the Christmas cards.

      Turnbull outlined everything.

Conroy was a simple statement of intent.

      :)

    • Noooo! That is a dreadful thought! I am now mentally scarred for life.
      How could you?

  13. If anything at least technology is getting a mention in the media and people are talking about the NBN. I think Turnbull is doing a good job of keeping Conroy on his toes, and Conroy knows he can’t slip up when he has Turnbull to answer to. If anything both ministers have had to lift their game on the NBN debate, but Turnbull knows his stuff and I think as a result Conroy has much improved as a minister on this portfolio.

  14. I hope Malcolm and Lucy had a great Christmas (and that Santa brought Tony a more positive personality!).
