NBN study release a major Greens victory
opinion It’s been a bittersweet day for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.
On the one hand, the good minister must have found a few minutes somewhere private this afternoon to punch the sky a few times in jubilation — no doubt far away from the ever-watching cameras of Australia’s press corps — at the revelation that his old nemesis Nick Minchin would retire.
Despite Conroy’s public ridicule of the volume of press releases issued by Minchin’s office during his year-long tenure shadowing Conroy, there is no doubt that Minchin is the only Opposition MP or Senator to have seriously pressured Conroy at any time since his 2007 ascension into the Ministry.
As we’ve previously noted, Conroy can safely ignore anything his current Shadow Tony Smith does — the MP is either apathetic towards the portfolio or has been neutered from above — and the bumbling Bruce Billson was never more than a gnat buzzing around Conroy’s ear.
