hey everyone,
just a quick query: Wanted to know if anyone has been using Windows 8 for more than a month or so? What feedback do you have on it — does the user interface get easier etc? Do you change your way of doing things to use the ’tiles’ more? I still haven’t upgraded my Windows 7 gaming machine at home; looking for feedback to see whether I should.

28/11/2012 at 1:59 pm #139248Depends what I’m doing. The tiles are great if I’m lazing around the house on my laptop doing the usual browsing or emails, love MetroTweet.
I’ve had a few months to get used to it, and I’ve had a WP7 phone for a while now so I’m all settled!
28/11/2012 at 1:59 pm #139249I upgraded my gaming PC at home to Win8.
I haven’t actually used the ‘metro’ UI much at all because it’s pointless on a desktop PC without a touchscreen or a gesture capable mouse.
Other than that, it’s fine, it feels like Windows 7. And since I launch everything from the application Launchy I don’t miss the start menu.
28/11/2012 at 2:45 pm #139250Upgraded my main dev box (5 monitors) from Win 7 Enterprise to Windows 8 Enterprise on release day. (Had been running CP and RP in VMs prior).
Hardly use the metro interface, I am running stock Windows 8 – its fine, I still just hit the Windows key and type app name and hit enter to launch any app (just like I did in Win 7), or use apps pinned to the desktop taskbar as in Win 7. I don’t understand the whole panic about no start button / booting to metro UI etc, so what, its one click to launch your desktop app on boot. I hardly use or notice the metro interface, but its there if I ever want it.
I enjoy the multi-monitor taskbar, Task Manager and File copy enhancements over Win 7 desktop.
My only issue with Windows 8 is that Microsoft have excluded the ‘Add Features’ option in Enterprise and Volume License versions – which means you can’t add Windows Media Center to these versions! Luckily VLC can play my recorded .wtv files.
I regard Windows 8 as a slightly better Windows 7, but with a mobile touch UI thrown in as a bonus.
28/11/2012 at 5:43 pm #139271Jump on in Renai, I haven’t had any real issues accept for the following (which are easily worked around):
1. Get a good Start menu replacement. I’ve been using Pokki (https://www.pokki.com/?ref=cm), but there are a few other alternatives (http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/how-to-start-menu-in-windows-8-2012116/)
2. Add the Desktop tile to the standard Win8 tile setup if it isn’t already.
3. Add Control Panel to the desktop (on the Desktop, right click some blank space and hit “personalise”). Trying to find the settings I wanted to tweak through the tile interface was pretty annoying.
4. Make sure to hit the Action Centre after you set everything up. I had some weird issues with sound even after installing the proper drivers, and then noticed two action centre updates that solved it entirely (this was after running Win Update and everything).
5. To properly close a program, hover the mouse right up near the top until it changes to a hand icon, then hold down the mouse button and drag the screen to the bottom.
Since working all that out, it’s been running great!
28/11/2012 at 5:46 pm #139272Two more tips:
To search for something while your on the tile interface, just start typing the name of what you want to find.
The Windows keys are used a lot more/better in Win8, check http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/06/the-10-most-useful-windows-8-keyboard-shortcuts/ for some of the handy ones.

Australia’s universities hacked on a regular basis
Not all of the hype around IT security can be believed at the moment — several times when your writer has investigated so-called ‘hacking’ attacks in recent months, we’ve found only low-level script-kiddie-type of behaviour at the bottom of the situation. However, there definitely are some serious break-ins around, as chronicled in this somewhat disturbing article published in late April by citizen journalism site The Citizen.
