Telstra and the crime of South Brisbane

In my opinion, the debacle in South Brisbane is Telstras final major dick move before they face structural separation.

Their handling of this whole thing, and the position they have left competitors in is a disgrace that by their standards is almost normal. The ACCC have their fingers in their ears and their heads up their arses. They're a consumer watchdog without the watchdog; Not only is this dog not watching shit, but its gotten so sick of licking its own arse it's now licking Telstras.

The destruction of the NBN, in light of this, will be one of the biggest tragedies in modern Australian history, and if it does come to pass that the Coalition is elected, and the NBN is scuttled, I will mourn its loss then watch as Australia gets what it deserves as a result of their ignorance in regards to Tony Abbott.

Abbott and his zoo crew chums aren't thinking about future generations but I wouldn't worry too much about it, they aren't thinking about future elections either. They might win the election in 2013 and maybe even the one after that but if they halt the NBN it will eventually come back to bite them in the ass big time. Kids who cant vote now will be wondering why our communications infrastructure still sucks and you can count on other parties using this to their advantage... the Liberal party may even become extinct just like the dodo birds they try so hard to emulate.

We still have time for ACCC to actually deal with this situation. Telstra are only just starting to get some bad press on the issue, the ACCC has been historically quite slow at resolving disputes like this.

Further, remember that the Coalition plan to structurally separate Telstra. Meaning issues like this will crop up less often, because Telstra cannot make any moves like undercutting their wholesale division. Also the wholesale division will have to be more open to providing more flexible products if they want to get increased sales and not have some guy just go and build a competing network (Hackett anyone)?

I'm sorry dude, but this is just screaming political bias. You have to remember that being biased about a political party doesn't help you much when the party you don't support isn't in power. It is best to try and understand the party rather than complaining about what they are doing wrong. I may not like the Liberal's take on Telecommunications policy either, but I do understand why they want to do what Turnbull has planned.

Armed with this information it is possible to incite action to try and push the policy towards something more helpful. Like encouraging Simon Hackett to commence his FTTH rollout come 2015, etc.

Sorry but you cant call me biased. I dont support either the Labour party or the coalition. I have not voted for either of these parties at any elections I have participated in. If I see I good policy I will recognise it and if I see a bad policy I will recognise that. It has nothing to do with the party. NBN = Good policy. Filter = Bad policy. Stop NBN rollout = Bad policy etc.

Political Bias is not equal to "supporting one party". It can apply to supporting a single policy as well. You support the NBN to exclusion of all other alternatives, that is biased.

Which simply doesn't apply in my case however thanks for making the assumption but I think I know which policies I support and which ones I dont...

I dont believe I have ever indicated that the current NBN plan is the only plan I would support. Just because I think the current NBN plan is a good idea does not in anyway exclude alternatives. NBNco are planning 93% fibre and I've always said that is a good place to start however if the plan was reduced to say 60% I'd say the same thing.

Okay, you're not going to try and tell me you're not at all biased. Everyone is biased. I didn't actually mean you showing clear bias is a bad thing, I just said, you might want to be careful because your particular comments are such that they don't show understanding of the Liberal policies.

*shakes head* You're not following me. I'm trying to say: try to understand the oppositions point of view. Why do they think FTTH is a waste? Is there evidence to support this? What can be done to address this? It's all well and good saying we can "reduce the footprint", or prioritise certain areas first, etc, but why should we, what does reducing the footprint allow us to do?

Just saying that the Coalition aren't capable of seeing the future doesn't justify a project on the scale of the NBN. The majority of people just don't understand what is so important about communications infrastructure, and even if they do, they still might disagree that FTTH is the correct response. Bashing the Liberals and their supporters doesn't change this.

There are a few exceptions, some even present at Delimiter, who wouldn't be able to understand your point of view if their life depended on it, but the rest of the people might want to hear about WHY you think the Liberals are going to "go extinct"? I don't see any evidence of that for example.

I dont know how you got that from my initial comment, I understand Liberal policies just fine, if I didn't I'd probably vote for them lol. Regardless I'm really not sure what the purpose of your comments are but if you want me to say something disparaging about the Labour party for balance I would be more than happy to. Start a topic on the censorship filter and I'll join in.

Now I'm shaking my head, that was just in jest but in all seriousness other parties will use it to their advantage if the coalition cancel the NBN for future elections.

That is what I pointed out you were being biased for. I don't think other parties will use it to their advantage. Why? Because the majority of votes, even marginal voters, do not give a shit about Broadband at the moment. That could possibly be to their detriment in the long term, and I'm of the opinion that not doing something about Broadband is of detriment to Australia, but you have to remember, we are a minority.

They would probably give more of a shit about broadband if the issues were as bad as biased IT tech sites commentators make emotionality make it out to be

The fact is, that Australia's current state of broadband is adequate for the majority of Australian's, so they do not see the NBN as a top priority. In fact a recent news poll service found, that out of all the major policies, NBN is the least popular (by quite a margin)

Clearly it is not adequate, the majority of Australians cannot get 12/1mbps on ADSL2+ a speed you claimed is a right. The average is much lower than that and very few get over that speed.

Btw what speed did you say you were getting again? You on HFC right?

    Source? URL?

Without knowing exactly what question was asked this is totally meaningless and doesn’t necessarily mean people are against the NBN. Care to fill us in? Source? URL?

You better back that statement up with some source, I refuse to believe it. Every shred of evidence I have seen that wasn't tabloid nonsense points in the other direction imo.

I feel if any policy is the most unpopular it'd be the carbon tax, personally I think it's a good policy, but we have people protesting and shit over it - you don't see anyone doing that over the NBN, infact, many are praising it, even some Liberal seats are asking 'when do we get it?'

Im finding it now, and the question was (paraphrasing), what is the biggest priority (and NBN was the lowest on the list)

We're still waiting. 2 days now and you cant even say who did this news poll? Look I'll help you out, here is a poll:

    Do you support the NBN?

72% support the NBN and 28% do not according to this poll. So what does it mean? Not much. It doesn't say anything about the priorities at all, it's not a multi-question, multi-option poll, if it were I'd expect the NBN to rate low. I like Labours broadband policy but not their filter policy. Censorship (to me) is a more important issue so I would rate that a higher priority to consider in a poll...

Hilarious but not unexpected. Turns out the poll was fictional.

Perhaps he's still, er, working on it?

After all, it's only five months since he said he would verify it, so no doubt he'll get around to producing the source.

Unless it was just a piece of political FUD, of course - which he would probably deny actively but not convincingly, as usual.
