news La Trobe University in Melbourne has inked a deal that will see its student management system move to a cloud solution provided by TechnologyOne.

Under the new deal, La Trobe will move from an on-premise environment to the Australian platform provider’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution with the aim of delivering an improved experience for students and “streamlined business processes” for academic and administration staff.

TechnologyOne said its industry-specific solution will provide students and staff with “increased functionality on all platforms”, including smartphones.

“The partnership with TechnologyOne is a significant component within our ‘Future Ready’ Strategic Plan, which will see the university become faster moving, more engaging and ensure everything we produce is of the highest quality,” said La Trobe’s Executive Director and Chief Information Officer Peter Nikoletatos.

“We are confident that TechnologyOne is the right vendor to partner with for a transformational project of this kind, given its deep connections to the higher education industry and history of success in this market,” Nikoletatos said.

At the core of the university’s strategy is the need to transform the student experience by providing “anywhere, anytime, any device capability, seamless real-time integration and flexibility in academic program management”, he added.

“We’re committed to ensuring La Trobe students have an outstanding experience, from first enquiry through to employment and beyond,” Nikoletatos said.

According to a statement from TechnologyOne, La Trobe will be the first university in Australia to have its student management system on a “true” SaaS platform.

The software provider said that a growing number of international universities are now using its SaaS solution, including several in the UK.

“We’re delighted to be working with La Trobe University at this transformational time in the university’s history,” said Adrian Di Marco, Executive Chairman at TechnologyOne. “La Trobe University has invested in a future-proof solution, gaining access to new features, functionality and technologies as part of the SaaS offering.”

“All universities, TAFEs and other education institutes experience an extreme peak load on their systems and servers during their enrolment period, he said. “With the elastic nature of our true SaaS solution, TechnologyOne will be able to support this for La Trobe University, eliminating the need for the university to own, run and manage expensive supporting hardware.

“This will free up the university to focus on its core business, such as providing superior student experience and academic support,” Di Marco said.
