True, but those cell phones are much, much easier to lock down than a modern smartphone with a full O/S.

An implementation such as this is not out of this world. Armies have had encrypted cell phones for two decades now. There’s heavy reliance on civilian hardware there (e.g., Alcatel, Siemens), with the exception of the encryption mechanisms.

No consumer grade hardware would last in those kind of conditions. I’d probably think they are looking at far more rugged devices. (IP44+, 1.8m+ drop spec etc…).Purely from a hardware perspective, you would probably see the likes of the CAT B10 (not yet released AFAIK) or the Honeywell Marathon being in there. Both have good rugged specs and have experience in ‘damaging’ industries. Honeywell specifically has experience working in Defense with other hardware(UAV’s used by US Army).
