I too have wondered why such database appliances (not necessarily with MySQL) haven’t become prominent in the small to medium end of the business market. Stripped operating system and tweaked solely to DB serving. Minimal Web Service for control / database control. Perhaps application vendors have been less supportive than at the big end where Oracle can dictate terms including supplying their own software.

Hmmm.. Looks like a direct competitor to Teradata hardware/software.. Will be interesting to do some more research on it..
