Virgin Blue sacks 20 for reported porn collection

Virgin Blue late yesterday confirmed it had sacked 20 staff for what the airline said was inappropriate use of computer systems and what the Sydney Morning Herald reported was participation in a pornography swap ring.

“We have recently terminated the employment of 20 people for inappropriate use of Virgin Blue computer systems,” said public affairs manager Danielle Keighery.

“Very clear policies for all our staff that gives guidelines around computer usage and the appropriate use of the internet. We take inappropriate conduct seriously and the terminations followed a rigorous and fair investigation process.”

Keighery would not confirm that the terminations were for using workplace computers to view and swap porn, but the Sydney Morning Herald reported those sacked were mainly baggage handlers who were using PCs at work to view and swap pornographic material.

Most Australian companies have policies in place that prohibit the viewing of pornographic material using workplace computers, with some companies going as far as implementing hard filtering software to block certain categories of sites.
